Porsche 975 RSE: The 804-Horsepower Formula E Race Car That Changes the Grid

The Porsche 975 RSE — 804 hp, all-wheel drive, 0–62 in 1.8 seconds, 208 mph. Porsche’s GEN4 Formula E car succeeds the four-time champion 99X Electric. Race debut December 2026.

The Porsche 975 RSE is the most powerful Formula E car ever built — an 804-horsepower, all-wheel-drive single-seater that accelerates to 62 mph in 1.8 seconds and tops out past 208 mph. Porsche presents the Porsche 975 RSE as the successor to the 99X Electric, which won four world championship titles over three seasons, and the generational leap is not incremental. The GEN4 regulations deliver 71 percent more peak power, permanent all-wheel drive for the first time, up to 150 percent more aerodynamic downforce, and a brake-by-wire system that recovers up to 700 kilowatts of energy under braking. Race debut is expected December 2026.

The Porsche 975 RSE runs 600 kilowatts (804 hp) in Attack Mode and 450 kilowatts (603 hp) in Normal Mode, fed by a 51.25-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery that charges at up to 600 kilowatts via CCS — fast enough to reshape how pit strategies work in Formula E. Drivetrain efficiency exceeds 97 percent from battery to wheels, meaning less than three percent of the energy is lost to friction and heat. Porsche develops the operating software, pulse inverter, electric motor, gearbox, differential, drive shafts, cooling system, and rear suspension in-house. New for GEN4, the Porsche 975 RSE adds the DC/DC converter, brake-by-wire system, hydraulic differential control units, and additional electronics to the in-house package.

The aerodynamic architecture runs two distinct packages — a low-downforce configuration for races where drag and energy efficiency matter, and a high-downforce setup for qualifying where consumption is irrelevant. The automotive world’s relationship with motorsport keeps producing road-relevant technology transfer, and the Porsche 975 RSE is built specifically to push that exchange in the electric direction.

How the Porsche 975 RSE Compares to Its Predecessor

The Porsche 975 RSE follows the 99X Electric — Porsche’s most successful Formula car to date. When Formula E launched in 2014, every driver needed two cars per race because a single battery could not cover the full distance. The Porsche 975 RSE operates in a different category entirely. Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, framed the progression directly — the GEN4 puts Formula E on the level of Formula 2 cars, and EV strengths are becoming increasingly evident on the track and on the road. The car weighs 2,013 pounds without the driver, stretches 218 inches long, and sits just over 45 inches tall.

The name references the 75th anniversary of Porsche Motorsport in 2026. The 975 RSE first hit the track in November 2025 and had completed 1,155 test miles by early April 2026, with Porsche running continuous development on the hardware package through October before the FIA homologates the specification. After homologation, the focus shifts entirely to software optimization — the digital layer where the real competitive advantage in Formula E is won and lost. The Porsche 975 RSE enters the grid as the reigning Formula E Manufacturers’ World Champion, and the customer team will also test the new car before the season opens.

The Drivers and the Road to December for the Porsche 975 RSE

Porsche factory drivers Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller share testing duties on the Porsche 975 RSE, which first hit the track in November 2025 and had completed 1,155 test miles by early April. Wehrlein called it a real eye-opener for fans and critics. Müller described the acceleration out of corners as spectacular and praised how aggressively the car allows you to drive. Porsche has until October to finalize the hardware before the FIA homologates the specification, after which the focus shifts to continuous software optimization.
