Highland single malt Scotch whisky distillery Aberfeldy has taken an exhilarating leap into a new terroir with its latest release, the Aberfeldy 21-Year-Old Malbec Cask Finish. This edition marks Aberfeldy’s first venture into wine cask, finishing in collaboration with the prestigious Argentinian winery Finca Ambrosia. Situated in the famed Uco Valley, known for its premium Malbec production, Finca Ambrosia brings a remarkable dimension to the Scotch, intertwining the classic Highland character with vibrant South American wine influences.

Finca Ambrosia’s location at the foothills of the Andes Mountains at 1250 meters above sea level contributes significantly to the complexity of its wines. The union between Aberfeldy and Finca Ambrosia celebrates craftsmanship and terroir, showcasing the mastery of the malt master and the winemaker.
Distilled on November 14, 2001, and aged for over two decades in sherry and bourbon re-fill barrels, the Aberfeldy 21-year-old was finished in Malbec French Oak wine casks for approximately eight months. These casks previously nurtured Finca Ambrosia’s Viña Unica, a Malbec, a proper nod to winemaker Daniel Pi’s quest for a wine that beautifully balances fruit purity and subtle oak integration. These casks were selected because they impart rich blackberry, plum, and black cherry notes, along with hints of cocoa powder, violet flowers, leather, and sweet tobacco spice, which complement Aberfeldy’s signature profile.
Malt Master Stephanie Macleod describes the Aberfeldy Malbec Cask Finish as opening with “sweet, toasted cereal, herbal sage, and hints of rosemary,” which gradually meld into “ripe strawberries drizzled in Highland honey.” The whisky evolves on the palate with “floral notes of rose and violet and a background hint of cinnamon spice,” culminating in a “creamy vanilla and endlessly smooth finish.” This complex flavor profile ensures that each sip is a discovery of new layers, making the Aberfeldy Malbec Cask Finish a remarkable addition to any whisky enthusiast’s collection.

Priced at $279.99, the Aberfeldy 21-Year-Old Malbec Cask Finish is a limited edition release. Each bottle is non-chill filtered to preserve its rich and intricate flavors. It is available at an ABV of 46%, ensuring a robust and engaging whisky experience. As one of only 100 bottles produced, this exclusive release promises to be a sought-after collectible for whisky aficionados and connoisseurs of unique spirits.
The Aberfeldy Malbec Cask Finish is a bridge between continents and cultures, a testament to the versatility and global appeal of Scotch whisky. It offers a compelling narrative and a sublime tasting experience that celebrates the rich heritage of both Scottish whisky and Argentinian winemaking.
