Elevating modern handgun standards, the Springfield Armory Echelon is a game-changer in modern striker-fired pistols.

Modern handguns have seen yet another evolution, courtesy of the Springfield Armory Echelon. The Echelon is not just another striker-fired pistol; it embodies innovation and technical prowess that is hard to match. Drawing inspiration from the ancient echelon formation—a military strategy that brought the mighty Spartans to their knees—Springfield Armory’s Echelon, chambered in 9mm, brings tactical brilliance into the realm of firearms. Central to its design is the Central Operating Group (COG). This self-contained, serialized system—made from precision stainless steel—allows users to switch between grip modules swiftly. The ingenuity doesn’t stop there; its patent-pending operating system promises durability and performance.

A key standout feature of the Echelon is its Variable Interface System (VIS). Doing away with cumbersome adapter plates, the VIS lets gunners mount over 30 different optics directly onto the slide. Thanks to its ingenious self-locking pins, they apply lateral pressure when the screws are torqued, ensuring a precise and sturdy fit.

The Springfield Armory Echelon levels up in the ergonomics department. With three distinct backstrap sizes, a unique Adaptive Grip Texture that becomes more tactile under pressure, and an enlarged trigger guard for gloved use, it’s clear that every element was thoughtfully designed. Its ambidextrous features further guarantee that this pistol caters to all.

The Echelon excels in the realm of safety. It surpasses SAAMI drop test standards, while the unique second sear design is a failsafe against unintended discharges. The trigger system (integrated into the COG) ensures a smooth user experience with a distinct wall and a satisfyingly crisp break.

Imagine a day at the gun range, where one moment you’re using the tactical rack U-Notch rear sight and a tritium front sight with a luminescent ring; the next, with the Echelon’s VIS, you swiftly switch to a red dot, maintaining accuracy throughout.

My first 500 rounds through the Echelon didn’t leave much to be desired, as it checks all boxes for me. My kit is equipped with a Trijicon RMR Type 2 Red Dot Sight and Surefire X300U-A. I opt for the 20 + 1 magazine configuration for range duty. The ambidextrous functionality is greatly appreciated, with my left hand being my strong hand. If I had to gripe about anything, it would be that the Adaptive Grip Texture seemed to cause rapid moisture that affected my grip. My remedy was to don a pair of Viktos Operatus gloves, and the problem was solved.

Whether you’re a seasoned shooter, a law enforcement officer, or someone who values unparalleled performance in firearms, the Echelon promises not just to meet but to redefine your expectations. Head down to your local range and rent one for a session or three. Come back and let me know your thoughts about the Echelon in the comments.
