Wilderness Trail Distillery Honors History with Every Pour

Some bourbons make waves, and then there are bourbons that make history. The Wilderness Trail Distillery 10-Year-Old Wheated Bourbon does both—beautifully. Released to commemorate the 250th anniversary of The Wilderness Road, this rare, small-batch expression isn’t just another age-stamped bottle. It’s a testament to time, place, and precision.

Crafted just miles from the very trail that opened the gateway to the American frontier, this bourbon’s inspiration is deeply rooted in Kentucky heritage. The Wilderness Trail Distillery team—led by co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Pat Heist—set out to create a whiskey that not only celebrates their legacy but advances it. To do that, they reached into the archives of patience and pulled three exceptional 10-year-old barrels. The result is a limited-edition, barrel-proof expression that captures the soul of exploration with every sip.

Wilderness Trail Distillery’s Most Unique Mash Bill Yet

The main points of Wilderness Trail Distillery 10-Year-Old Wheated Bourbon, apart from its age or limited availability, are its bold, uncharted mash bill: 51% corn, 45% wheat, and 4% malted barley. This is the first time this particular grain recipe has been bottled by the distillery, making it a collector’s dream and a connoisseur’s delight.

What hits the glass is nothing short of artistry. At barrel proof, it opens with deep, warm oak tones that immediately assert its decade-long rest. That’s followed by a lush wave of vivid sweetness—think caramelized brown sugar, baked apricots, and vanilla bean—balanced against a sturdy backbone of seasoned wood and a hint of earthy spice. The wheat’s high proportion softens the edges beautifully, rounding out the mouthfeel while enhancing the bourbon’s drinkability at strength. The finish? Long, layered, and satisfying, with a buttery warmth that lingers like an echo from the past.

In Dr. Heist’s own words, “These barrels represent ten years of patience and precision… a bourbon with incredible harmony.” And he’s not overstating it. This limited release represents only the second public offering of a 10-year bourbon from Wilderness Trail Distillery, and no future batches of this mash bill are planned.

Wilderness Trail Distillery Release Details and Where to Get It

This commemorative expression is available exclusively at the Wilderness Trail Distillery Visitor Center beginning December 12, 2025. Given its significance, limited barrel count, and the distillery’s strong following, it’s safe to say this release won’t stay on shelves long.

With the 10-Year capturing immediate attention, Wilderness Trail also has its eye on the near future. Fans of their younger expressions will be pleased to know that three private barrel selections of the distillery’s six-year offerings—Wheated Bourbon, High Rye Bourbon, and Rye Whiskey—are set to hit broader markets in January 2026. For those who can’t wait, the 6-Year Wheated Bourbon is already available for pre-order.

But for the bourbon drinker who appreciates depth, history, and a story in every pour, the Wilderness Trail Distillery 10-Year-Old Wheated Bourbon is a milestone, both for the brand and for the bourbon category itself.
